Fall 2021 SMAH Peer Education/Marketing Intern

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY: This paid internship position is a part of the Fall 2021 Sarasota-Manatee Arts & Humanities (SMAH) Internship Program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant and private donors to New College of Florida. Thus, this internship has certain expectations per the funding and program requirements.

  1. The SMAH internships are for CURRENT New College students and will be expected to be completed for academic credit. The student selected for this internship must find a faculty sponsor and create/add a full-term tutorial (select "internship" as the objective) to their Fall 2021 academic contract.   2. Students selected for SMAH internships must review and complete a Student Intern Agreement Form, which details program expectations. Fall 2021 interns will receive an updated electronic fillable agreement form once they have been offered an internship. Please review the attachment as a past example, so that you are aware of the expectations.

Organization's Mission:
Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (PPSWCF) provides access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care and accurate health information through patient care, education, and advocacy.

Internship Description:
The intern will work closely with the Peer Education Program Manager and the Brand and Marketing Coordinator to help edit Naked Truth, a magazine created for young people, by young people participating in the Peer Education Program. Responsibilities include attending weekly virtual (*may transition to in-person) Naked Truth Committee meetings and assisting with reviewing final drafts of articles, poems, essays, and educational content submitted for the magazine issue; reviewing and correcting grammar, punctuation and spelling as well as the readability and clarity of each sentence structure; and fact checking content for accuracy. The intern will also be involved in creative sessions to develop innovative ideas and topics for future issues and can help recruit student contributors for the magazine publication from New College. The intern will also provide support to PPSWCF’s social media account to help develop accurate and inclusive sex education content designed to reach youth (15-24) and create marketing materials for events and outreach education.

Learning Outcomes:
  • The intern will learn about PPSWCF’s mission and services and reproductive rights and social justice issues and gain experience working with and supporting high school students in the Peer Education Program.
  • Additionally, the selected intern will learn about the publication process from beginning to end including the layout process and copy-editing experience.

Qualifications:
  • Understand and respect PPSWCF’s mission
  • Demonstrate interest in sexual and reproductive health and social justice issues
  • Strong writing and grammar and copy-editing skills
  • The intern will be asked to help with the creative process of Naked Truth and to create educational and marketing materials for social media and other marketing channels, graphic design/layout skills are preferred
  • Someone who is open and flexible to learning and supporting new projects
  • Works well with others
  • Interested in working with teens is highly desired for this position.
  • Applicants selected for an interview should be prepared to share at least 3 examples of their recent writing and design work

Internship Location/Expected Meetings:
Hybrid (in-person and remote): Intern will be required to work at least 12 hours per week.

The selected intern will help support the Peer Education Program Manager and will be required to attend weekly Zoom meetings on Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm. Please note that we may transition back to weekly in-person meetings at 736 Central Ave every Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm once PPSWCF decides it is safe for groups to meet in-person. If determined, the selected intern will be expected to attend in-person meetings.

On-site Location: Sarasota Administrative Office – 736 Central Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34236. 

Travel will not be required - except for travel to on-site location as needed for this hybrid position (in-person and remote). Intern will be required to participate in a New Employee Orientation (NEO), and complete a level 2 background screening and drug test to intern at PPSWCF.
