Fall 2021 SMAH Coexistence Club Coordinator

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY: This paid internship position is a part of the Fall 2021 Sarasota-Manatee Arts & Humanities (SMAH) Internship Program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant and private donors to New College of Florida. Thus, this internship has certain expectations per the funding and program requirements.

  1. The SMAH internships are for CURRENT New College students and will be expected to be completed for academic credit. The student selected for this internship must find a faculty sponsor and create/add a full-term tutorial (select "internship" as the objective) to their Fall 2021 academic contract.   2. Students selected for SMAH internships must review and complete a Student Intern Agreement Form, which details program expectations. Fall 2021 interns will receive an updated electronic fillable agreement form once they have been offered an internship. Please review the attachment as a past example, so that you are aware of the expectations.

Internship Description:
We currently have seven Coexistence Clubs in schools throughout Sarasota and Manatee County. These clubs, under supervision of a faculty advisor, are tasked with helping to create a culture in their schools that promotes diversity, inclusion, respect and kindness. The intern would act as a Coexistence Club Coordinator by communicating with the club advisors on a minimum bi-weekly basis to maintain/increase engagement, help brainstorm club activities, distribute club materials (t-shirts, buttons, banner, etc.), schedule all-advisor check-ins, and more. The intern would also assist the education director in coordinating and implementing Unity Days, an initiative that promotes empathy and respect, throughout all public high schools in Sarasota County.

Qualifications:
  • A qualified candidate should be passionate about and uphold the core values of our mission, have effective interpersonal skills, and a strong desire to work with educators and high school students.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel are preferred.
  • Personal transportation and a valid U.S. driver’s license is also required.
  • Previous experience working with students in a teaching/supervisory capacity is desirable, but not required.

Internship Location:
Hybrid (in-person and remote): Our offices are located at 1209 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239. Travel to the office will be required for the first day and for in-person meetings between the intern and staff. Additional travel to/from area high schools with Coexistence Clubs and those that participate in a Unity Day will be required as well (contingent upon school district COVID-19 visitor policies in place at that time). For any trips to local high schools, mileage will be reimbursed at the current IRS standard mileage rates. Additional work hours will take place remotely/electronically.
